I personally haven't read a book with prostitutes or at least one as the main character, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't not be shed in such a positive light. 金花 is is very positive person and has no qualms with doing what she has to do in order to live and support her and her father. In movies, they are usually rude and selfish/greedy. They seem to have a more negative outlook in life and usually not religious I believe.
Well, unless the character's religion is a strong characteristic, it is not usually mentioned in the story at all. The only characters of books and movies that I can think of where the characters even had a religion would be in "A Walk to Remember" where she was a quiet, well nurtured girl who's strong belief in religion saved and supported her while sick, and that of the characters in the book "The Da Vinci Code" where many characters had their own beliefs and religions. As for a movie with prostitutes, the only movie that comes to mind is "Moulin Rouge" where they were labeled "courtesans." None of them looked towards religion even when dying, but always towards fame and money.
